Introduction

The entries in this diary provide a first-hand account of conditions in Canada West (Ontario) just before Confederation.

Questions for analysis

  1. List six places that are depicted in the diary.
  2. Make a sketch map of the colony, showing Marmaduke Matthews' route and the sites he saw along the way, such as indications of farming activity.
  3. What problems can this kind of primary source pose for a researcher? List three things you found frustrating about these entries. Explain.
  4. In spite of these difficulties, the diary kept by Marmaduke Matthews does allow us to see something of life in the colony. Create a chart using headings such as Foods, Transportation, Cities and Towns, Social activities. Feel free to revise or add to the above headings. Complete the chart using information from the diary.
  5. If you were Mr. Matthews, in search of a suitable piece of farming property, what would your plan of action be from the time when the diary ends?
