Using Primary Sources: The Historian's Tools

Imagine that you and your partner are detectives whose task is to gather evidence - to get as much reliable historical information as possible from the following primary sources.

Your teacher will assign you a couple of the stations to visit. To visit each station, click on the station number (on the left) or the station name below. Be prepared to discuss your answers in class and how a historian might use these primary sources to gather historical evidence.

Station 1:

Soap advertisements (ephemera)

Station 2:

Prohibition debate (ephemera)

Station 3:

Children's Aid Society cases (book)

Station 4:

Housing conditions in slums (book)

Once you have completed your station activities, you are ready to move on to the WebQuest.
